Francis James and Gough Whitlam

This one is probably apocryphal. Whitlam complained when James beat him for the prize in Divinity at Canberra Grammar. "How come James won the Divinity Prize? I am a much better student."
"Ah yes", agreed the Headmaster. "However Whitlam, I have awarded the prize to James because he believes what he writes!"
